One of the old laptops has been broken. It was an Asus k550 and the motherboard was fried. It is not worth fixing it. After scavenging SSD and Ram, we wanted to do something with the display. The display was great and had pretty good picture quality. You just need an HDMI control board to turn it into an external monitor. First of all, we need to disconnect the top part.
Now we need to accurately remove the display. We need to see the display number on the back to get the right control board.
Now we can see that the display is: LNT156HL01. Using any favorite website like either AliExpress, eBay, or Amazon, search for "control board ltn156hl01". Now you can choose the board you like. We picked a low-profile board with mini-HDMI connectors.
To connect the control board we need to find the display connector. The cable that goes to the motherboard has all connections together: web camera, touch screen, display, microphone, etc. But we need only display, in my case it looks like:
Now, we can connect all cables to make sure that the control board and the display working.
Now we could build a display case from scratch. But the current aluminum laptop top is great. We decided to use it. It just needed additional aluminum panels for the front panel with buttons and back cover for the control board. Here is the final result:
